| YTD Inventory / Shipment Report In Tons | ||
| 1st Marketing Month | Crop: 2025 | 1. IPA’s post-harvest estimate for Iran’s 2025 pistachio production stands at 225,000 tons (dried in-shell basis), representing a 6% decrease from its spring forecast due to higher-than-anticipated blank percentage and smaller nut size. With an estimated 15,000 tons carry-over from the previous crop, Iran’s gross inventory at the start of the current marketing year is estimated at 240,000 tons. 2. First month shipments (23 Sep-22 Oct) stood at 19,000 MT of in-shell equivalent pistachios—a relatively low figure for a gross inventory of 240,000 tons. Shipments were widely spread across main destinations with no single dominant market. Domestic and foreign trade barriers have pushed nearly one-third of Iran’s first-month pistachio exports toward re-export hubs (UAE and Turkey). Exports to the CIS show a significant increase compared to the same month of the previous crop year. This growth may be attributed to the free trade agreement between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union, which removes tariffs on most traded goods, including pistachios. 3. The new marketing year opened with a mixed dynamic: the in-shell pistachio trade remained relatively sluggish—affected by the shock of higher-than-expected Californian opening prices and continued exchange-rate volatility—while the kernel trade was noticeably more upbeat. The slow pace in Iranian pistachio exports has largely stemmed from operational and regulatory complications in local export processes, combined with strong expectations of further Rial depreciation. As a result, supply has stayed tight, and serious demand for in-shell pistachios has yet to emerge. 4. As a consequence of unusual small nut size, it is expected that a larger portion of 2025 Iranian pistachio crop will be dedicated to kernel production, further limiting the inshell supply. Pistachio kernel export is expected to speed up in the coming months, boosted by sustained demand and overcoming the natural lag caused by the time-consuming kernel production process. |
